The Case for an All-Inclusive Escape

Tiffany Mitchell

They have a reputation for mediocrity — but the finest all-inclusive resorts are anything but. Here is what to expect at the top tier.

Say 'all-inclusive' to the wrong audience and watch them wince. The phrase conjures images of overcrowded pools, watered-down drinks, and a buffet that has seen better days. That reputation, earned by certain budget properties decades ago, has unfairly followed the category — and kept countless travellers from one of the most genuinely pleasurable experiences in modern luxury travel.

The truth is that the finest all-inclusive resorts bear no resemblance to that caricature. They are, by any measure, exceptional. And the all-inclusive model — when executed at this level — is not a compromise. It is an advantage.

What Changes at the Top Tier

Properties like Sandals Royal Barbados, the Excellence Riviera Cancun, or the Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana have reimagined what all-inclusive means. Multiple à la carte restaurants — not a single buffet — with cuisine ranging from Japanese to French to coastal Italian, all included. Premium spirits at every bar: no well liquor, no watered-down pours. Spa credits. Nightly entertainment that is sophisticated, not corny. And accommodation that genuinely rivals the finest standalone resorts.

At this level, 'all-inclusive' means something closer to 'everything taken care of.' You arrive, your wristband is on, and the only decision you make for the rest of the week is where to have dinner.

The Freedom of a Settled Bill

There is a psychological dimension to all-inclusive travel that is underappreciated. When every meal, every drink, every activity is included, you stop calculating. The mental overhead of a holiday — am I spending too much, should I skip the excursion, is this worth ordering — simply vanishes. What is left is the rare and luxurious experience of being genuinely present.

For couples and families especially, this frictionlessness is transformative. You are not managing a budget; you are managing your relaxation. That is a meaningfully different holiday.

Who It Suits Best

All-inclusive resorts are particularly well-suited to a few types of traveller. Honeymooners who want to disappear into each other without logistics. Families who want to keep children — and costs — contained. Groups of friends who want to ensure everyone is on the same financial page. And frankly, anyone who has had a complicated trip recently and simply wants to be cared for.

That said, they are not for everyone. If you relish wandering a city independently, eating at tiny local restaurants, and building your own adventure, a resort of any kind may feel confining. Knowing yourself is half the planning.

Getting It Right

Within the luxury all-inclusive category, the differences between properties are significant. Room categories, beach access, restaurant quality, activity programmes — all vary enormously, even within the same brand. This is exactly where an advisor adds value: I know which properties deliver, which room categories are worth the upgrade, and which brands align with which type of traveller.

Through my preferred partner relationships, I can also layer on amenities — resort credits, room upgrades, welcome gifts — that make an already exceptional experience feel genuinely bespoke. If you have been on the fence about all-inclusive travel, let me show you what it looks like at its very best.
